Avengers Come to Edinburgh!

A couple of months ago my day started out like any other day does for a project manager, an email popped in to my in box. An enquiry for some illuminated curved face takeaway menu cases. Nothing strange or out of the ordinary about that, I thought. I specified the product, sent the cost, which was accepted and the job put into production.

Very soon after this I received another request from the same client; they were looking for some built up halo lit letters with brushed and polished stainless steel returns, again nothing unusual about this. I contacted the client for more information, and that is when it all became clear what the project was. “We are doing a little filming in Edinburgh, and need some signage to dress the sets” she said! The penny then dropped and I realised what the “little” filming was. Not every day you get involved with a project that is going to have a global audience. We finalised the specification and finishes for the letters and these were put into production. There was a specific deadline for delivery with these, due to the tight filming schedule. We managed to meet this deadline, in fact we delivered them early – our own super heroes swung in to action!

By this time the client was in Edinburgh and requested a visit to our premises to meet us and have a look at our production set up. They popped in and met our own team of special people, they realised that there were other items we could assist with. They explained that there would be many requests to come and warned us that there would be very tight delivery times – “are you up for it?” she asked, “bring it on” I said! And so it began.

We had produced some café barriers, black posts with printed banners. All supplied within 5 days of getting the artwork. The client called me asking for another set exactly the same, “why?” I asked. “Oh, the original ones are being blown up” she said “but we need them replaced”. No problem, when do you need them, “the day after tomorrow, is that OK”? The banners were printed, hemmed, stitched and delivered all in good time.

In the last week there have been daily requests for printed posters, foamex panels with prints, cut vinyl graphics amongst other things. We even supplied some silver vinyl for wrapping table legs?! Most of these items were made and collected the same day.

Then it was time for our crack installation team to get involved. Cockburn Street was one of the locations. We were asked to do some cover up work on one shop and some branding on another, installing large printed vinyl graphics to windows and fascia’s. Once the shooting was complete we returned to set and undertook the reinstatement work returning the shop to what it looked like originally.

This was an exciting project for us to be involved in and it was particularly satisfying to see our work in all of the National Newspapers and the TV coverage. The fact that for the client, we are a one stop shop covering all aspects of signage took the stress out of their procurement. All of us at Specialized signs have enjoyed our involvement with the project and look forward to the film release. This project worked so well for us and the client, we worked as a team, through project management, design, manufacture, assembly, installation and not to forget admin and accounts. You will agree that this is a pretty special client and quite a high profile project. We have the same value for all of our clients and the same quality of product and service regardless of the project size.

Huge Vinyl Building Wrap !!

Printed 7 year polymeric vinyl with 7 year polymeric laminate.

We were approached recently by one of our regular clients. Their premises are the iconic Jenners Depository in Balgreen, or as they are now known, Edinburgh Self Storage. We were told that the distinctive red brick building had cracks appearing in the peirs on the west elevation which were getting progressively worse due to water ingress. Their solution was to have the damaged elements clad with powder coated folded aluminium sheets. We were asked if we could wrap these cladding panels with a printed vinyl complete with matt laminate that would remain colour fast and not shrink or peel. The option we chose was a polymeric 7 year vinyl with a 7 year matt laminate.

Selecting the material wasn’t the only problem we faced, we also had to produce prints to match the existing brickwork and grey concrete sections dividing the levels. We asked one of our designers, who has a keen interest in photography to pop along to site and take some pictures of the brick and the concrete. We used his photographs for the artwork we used to print from. After a couple of test prints we got an almost exact match, both in scale and colour.

The scope of the works allowed for 8 piers each 9.1m high accessed using a Genie Z80 / 60 operated by one of our fully accredited IPAF  carrying operators. We installed the prints working from the bottom to the top overlapping as we went to avoid the risk of any water ingress. It took three days to  complete the installation, as you will see from the photographs we achieved an almost identical match. Our client was exceptionally happy with the outcome and continues to work with us.

This was a pretty unusual project using vinyl, we do all aspects of vinyl work ranging from simple window graphics, full vehicle wraps and printed wall panels.

Oscars Take-Away

Specialized signs recently helped one of our clients create a brand identity for their new addition to a growing port folio of restaurants/ Takeaways.

Once the initial design had been approved and a new brand was born, we fabricated a Gloss black folded dibond sign tray with “Home delivery and phone number” being CNC cut out of the panel, backed with an Opal Acrylic slab. This section was internally illuminated with LED’s. Size of the sign was 600mm x 10,500mm.

“Oscars” we had manufactured this from Polished Stainless Steel, 80mm returns with a 20mm trim Diamond logo, with an Opal Acrylic face and printed vinyl overlay. This section was 500mm x 2000mm in size internally illuminated with LED’s. This part of the sign over hung the folded dibond sign tray to give a free floating effect.

With specialized having a very creative design department and a very skilled production team who fabricate 99% of our signage in house, this enabled us to design, produce and install this sign within 10 working days on top of an already hectic month!!

Sign Makers – Bannatynes Gym Norwich

Another successful installation for our sign makers and project management department. The job consisted of built up letters illuminated by LED’s mounted at high level. The completion of this job was achieved in an impressive timescale with site time reduced to one day by our innovative installation methods. This has helped us to maintain client satisfaction by reducing any disruption to their premises.

We are currently intending to trial new LED modules including the SMD Injection Led 2 Diode Module with Lens Pure White with the intention of raising our already high standards and achieving a more constant illumination in our built up letters and illuminated fret cut signage.

In other news we are carrying out a large branding exercise for Greens across the central belt of Scotland. The installations consist of a variety of fret cut signs with internal illumination, built up letters and cut vinyl. Internally we are providing a mix of cut vinyl and printed vinyl to help maximise the visual impact of the store.

All of the cases above are just a few reasons why we are Scotland’s fastest growing signage company, servicing not only the central belt but the entire United Kingdom.

Vehicle wraps Edinburgh – van wrapping Edinburgh

We are the vehicle wrapping experts in Edinburgh!

We recently carried out a full colour change wrap on a Porsche 911 GT3. This was a very high end wrap.  We used coachwork specialists JRM to remove the doors, mirrors, spoiler, front and rear lights, roof sills and other small parts so that we achieved the highest standard possible.  We removed all of these parts so that you could not see the colour of the car even when you opened the doors or boot and even when you go right up to the lights etc you cannot see the paintwork which is under the wrap!  We are Edinburgh’s number one car wrapping specialist!

We also carry out a huge amount of van wraps, either full or partial.  Partial van wraps are a very cost effective solution and can give a fantastic finished product that will raise our brand above your competitors and will not break the bank.

6 Degrees North

Specialized Signs have recently completed the supply and installation of signs at two sites for 6 Degrees North Specialising in Belgian beers, who showcase beers from their own brewery alongside some of the finest home grown UK & European craft beer.

The project consisted of main fascia signs, folded aluminium sign panels fret cut, with built up letters set inside the panels to create an embossed effect. The edge of the letters are lit with bright white led modules. This gives a subtle and understated illumination. The finish of the panels is a brushed zinc effect complete with matt lamination. One of the challenges we faced was to try and create the zinc effect in print and ensure that the colour was a match to the architect’s specification. There is a brushed texture running through the print, therefore as each fascia comprises 3 or 4 panels it was critical that the vinyl was done as one continuous print. The print was done on polymeric vinyl with a polymeric matt laminate to make sure there is no shrink back at the joins.

Included in the project were built up letters complete with halo illumination. The returns of the letters were painted to a specific RAL colour and the faces finished in the same zinc effect print. A bespoke aluminium A frame pavement sign, the header fret cut and painted black, the bottom of the sign was finished with a branded print and matt laminate.  To complete the internal décor we supplied and installed various internal printed graphics and we were contracted by the company doing the main fit out, to CNC cut a number of MDF panels, these were then painted and installed..Double sided fret cut internally projecting sign with partially illuminated return. Finally to complete the look we produced branded safety manifestations for various glazed door panels in the pub.

Result, a happy client and architect, we are now looking forward to commencing the next addition to their portfolio

Signage Rollout Cumbernauld, Stirling, Falkirk, Bathgate, Livingston, Bo’ness and Grangemouth

Our experienced project managers recently helped one of our clients on re-branding 7 restaurants across Scotland. Starting with a blank canvas, working closely with the client and our in house designers, we put together and created a brand identity that looks very unique and eye catching.

As always, going over and above for every client, we suggested LEDs for this project as the LEDs are very energy efficient and have a life span of 50,000 hours, compared to any other illumination.

Each sign manufactured from folded dibond with a subtle Matt Black back ground, with “The ultimate taste” being CNC cut out of the dibond (fret cut) backed with Opal Acrylic. This part of the sign was internally illuminated with our super bright V180 LED modules to maximise illumination. The “Dhillion’s” part of the sign are built up powder coated rim and return letters 400mm cap height with Red Acrylic faces, each letter having Red LED modules within the letters, giving the faces a very Rich Red even glow.

Our very experienced sign fitters had a tight deadline to install all 7 sites within 3 days, before the big launch, which was completed to the highest standard finishing of this project nicely, with the client very satisfied with the outcome and service.

Keep your eyes out for the signs on social media they will be appearing very soon. No job too big or small, please get in touch for any signage requirements, we are here to help advice and guide all of our clients in the right direction on every project.
